Live The New Year In Bite Size Chunks!
(By Pastor Steve Taylor)
Lots of people "talk the talk" but not everyone "walks the walk".
leads only to poverty."
(Proverbs 14:23)
If I had a dollar for everything I was going to do, I'd be rich. Ideas and intentions come easily; action proves to be more difficult. As the saying goes, "the road to destruction is paved with good intentions" (I may have changed the wording just a bit,)
I had a timely discussion yesterday on time management that really drove this truth home. Like many people, I keep a daily "to-do" list. I realized that the things I have on my list are big items that aren't necessarily going to get completed in one day. I realized that I'd gotten away from an important principle: break big assignment down into "bite-sized" chunks that are more easily managed. It's better to make steady progress incrementally on a project that to tackle the whole thing all at once.
So what's all this got to do with things of eternal importance? Everything. Often we have great intentions and aspirations for the Lord's work. It's like the young pastor who starts out with the motto, "win the world to Christ!" By midlife he changes his motto to, "win some of the world to Christ!” Later in life he changes it to, "try not to lose too many". Good intentions without a plan of action inevitably lead to such cynicism.
Jesus, in His Great Commission, outlined the big plan as well as the incremental steps when he said, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations" (Matthew 28:19). The big plan is to reach the world; all nations, but the incremental steps are to make disciples - one person at a time.
If our "to-do" list today includes "win the world to Christ and the Kingdom", we're probably going to be discouraged when it doesn't happen. And we'll get very discouraged if we include that same item on our list every day. But if we make it a goal to have a conversation about Christ and the Kingdom with one person today we'll have broken the Great Commission down into bite-sized tasks. Better a little progress through an incremental step than no progress on the whole task.
Well, enough talk; time to get on with my "Kingdom assignments" for the day.

Did You Know?
The longest sermon on record was delivered by Clinton Locy of West Richland, Washington, in February, 1955. It lasted 48 hours, 18 minutes and included texts from every book in the Bible. A congregation of eight was on hand at the close. – Guinness Book of World Records
Rest assured, Pastor Cain doesn’t preach this long and will be done today in time for you to have lunch.
So why not come to church regularly? Push out all your worldly concerns, focus on eternal matters, visit with fellow Christians and just refresh yourself in every way? God said we needed one day of rest in every week to find strength & emotional stability to work the other six. See you often!

In Remembrance of Earlene Polzer
Ethel Sherman has given a donation to our church in memory of Earlene. I know Earlene loved our church and its teachings; she would be grateful to know this memorial went to our church.
THE WEDDING YESTERDAY of Clyde Whaley and Grace Allshouse was very beautiful. The church was filled with those who wanted to share in this celebration. Since Grace had never seen Niagara Falls and because Clyde wanted to visit with a close friend in Canada, guess where they’re going on their honeymoon? Our love and best wishes to you both!!
KAREN CAIN mentioned a special prayer need last Sunday of the untimely death of the husband of a close friend. Cathy Tanyard and their 6-year old child, Julia, would covet our prayers for them as they grieve the unexpected loss of their husband and father.

FRANK ROPER is our “in resident” computer technician who deserves a hearty “Thank You” from the church musicians and congregation for the persistence he used and the frustrations he experienced in taking 3 days just to find a contact person for our electronic piano – now no longer manufactured. Then he was able to order the part (not an easy task) and have it shipped FedEx overnight priority mail from Washington State. He removed the old computer board with skillful hands and installed the new one last Thursday … just in time for the Whaley/Allshouse wedding yesterday (Saturday)!! Thanks! Thanks!

and President Bush's special proclamation will ask schools to commemorate the day.
While many public schools are denying students' rights to freely express their faith, the U.S. Department of Education has issued guidelines that clearly list and explain those rights. For example, students have the legal right to express their faith in their assignments; they can witness to their classmates; they can read their Bibles at school; and they can pray. But many teachers have never seen these guidelines and believe they cannot allow these or any other religious expressions in their classrooms.
It's fitting that Religious Freedom Day comes on January 16, the day after we commemorate Martin Luther King's birthday. After all, King's religious faith was the foundation of his fight for civil rights. And it was religious freedom in America that allowed him to express his faith against a dreadful evil and move the entire nation.

CLARIFICATION FOR NEXT YEAR: I didn’t realize until recently that some are bringing Poinsettias for each person mentioned in the memorials printed at Christmas. I’ve always bought one flower and listed those I wanted to remember. I got to thinking that some might like to mention other names but couldn’t afford to buy that many Poinsettias. It’s not that you can’t buy several if you want, but I’m suggesting one flower is enough but yet list all your near loved ones you’d like to remember.
