BOOK REVIEW - MARCH, 2007 by Anita Cain
Edsel Ford

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in

a setting of silver.” (Prov 25:11 NRSV)

The story of Edsel Ford is one of tragedy. Edsel was the son of Henry Ford, the famous founder of Ford Motor Company. At the ripe age of 25 he was appointed president of the company but was never truly given the authority of the position. His famous father unofficially ran the company and ridiculed, humiliated, and manipulated his compliant son. Eventually his broken spirit led to broken health, and Edsel died of cancer at the young age of 49. Edsel Ford's tragic life is testimony to the timeless truth of Proverbs 18:14,

"The spirit of a man can endure his sickness, But as for a

broken spirit who can bear it?"

We must never underestimate the power of a spoken word. There is more power in our words than the most powerful weapons of mass destruction.

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who

love it will eat its fruit." (Proverbs 18:21)

Consider this: our words are either life or death to others. We either build up by what we say, or we tear down.

One of my favorite persons in the Bible is a man named Barnabas. His name literally means, "son of encouragement". There is some interesting information about him in Acts.

"They sent Barnabas off to Antioch. Then when he arrived and witnessed the grace of God, he rejoiced and began to encourage them all with resolute heart to remain true to the Lord; for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And considerable numbers were brought to the Lord. (Acts 11:22:26)

Barnabas recognized the work of God in the church at Antioch and focused on encouraging the members of the church. His encouragement was a factor in a large number of people coming to salvation and the truth. And he also was instrumental in encouraging a man named Paul, who would later become the Apostle Paul.

I doubt that the church at Antioch was any more perfect than the church you're involved with. Barnabas could have easily focused on the faults and flaws, but he chose to encourage the good rather than dwell on the negative. He chose to be a part of the solution rather than to be part of the problem.

We desperately need "Barnabasses" today! We need those who will encourage the good rather than amplify the bad. We need those who will bring life to others through encouraging words.

You have the power of life and death in your words. Choose to bring life to your family, friends, and coworkers today.  Be a Barnabas!

New Creation Museum in Cincinnati

Creation Museum to Demonstrate How Bible, Scientific Evidence Mesh

Answers in Genesis (AiG), the largest apologetics organization on the planet, is constructing a $27 million revolutionary new museum designed to transport guests into a 50,000-square-foot visual, biblical representation of the history of the world. Set to open Memorial Day weekend 2007, AiG’s Creation Museum features state-of-the-art, family-friendly exhibits, including life-sized, realistic animatronic dinosaurs and humans. The facility, situated among the hills of a scenic 49-acre parcel of land near the Cincinnati airport, is a time machine launching visitors into the period of ancient history soon after the time of creation. Organizers believe the museum will illustrate that the Bible is the supreme authority in all matters and can withstand the most ardent scientific scrutiny. They argue that facts cannot speak for themselves. “The Bible, where it touches on science or any subject including same-sex marriage, race or abortion, is totally trustworthy,” said Ken Ham, co-founder and president of Answers in Genesis.

Disclaimer by Pastor Cain: The above organization does teach that “Jesus is the Creator” … meaning they hold to the typical orthodox view of the godhead.  But, it is refreshing to see that they teach the ‘young earth’ point of view and that God created all things.  No other museum like it anywhere.

BOOK REVIEW - MARCH, 2007 by Anita Cain

The Beautiful Ache

By Leigh McLeroy

When is an ache a beautiful ache? The author of this month’s review book describes it best in her own words. "The beautiful ache is that fleeting pang that reminds us of home. Not the home we’ve always known–the home we’ve never seen. The ache pierces and pries open the heart but doesn’t nearly satisfy it. It whets the appetite but doesn’t begin to fill it. It unmasks beauty but not completely. It reeks of truth but stops just short of telling all."

Put another way, C. S. Lewis said, "If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world."  Years ago I heard someone who analyzes dreams telling about how often people are traveling in their dreams. They are on buses, planes, trains, autos, boats and they are all going somewhere. Where are they going? Well, this person thought they were going to that home they’ve never seen–back to Eden and perfection. It all hearkens back to that God-shaped vacuum within us all.

The Beautiful Ache (Finding the God Who Satisfies When Life Does Not) by Leigh McLeroy - There are many kinds of aches: to travel, belong, persevere, celebrate, find adventure, to hear God, to hope, trust, expect, labor, find healing, the ache for beauty, the ache of the prodigal, grief, worship, memory, the ache to feast with the father. It is not at all unusual for people to try to fill the ache with just about anything except God. They may not even know what it is for which they hunger. This is the reason for addictions–more and more of the "cure" we seek fills us less and less, so we increase the input, but the desired contentment is elusive. The purpose of the ache is to cause us to seek God–the only One who can satisfy it. That’s why the ache is beautiful–it leads us to the arms of God for comfort. Even so, the ache will never be completely satisfied on this earth. We must keep seeking–keep coming back to be nurtured over and over again. The goal is to become like Christ that we may spend eternity with Him.
