Missions Month
“Christian, Can You Spare A Hundred Bucks?”
UPDATE FROM HAITI - This word came from Pastor Lesly this week: “Please, continue to pray for us in Haiti because things are starting to get better now concerning the security in Port-au-Prince. The Haitian police and the United Nations soldiers have arrested a lot of gang groups and are putting them in jail. We have started to move freely in the streets now in Haiti. We praise God for that.” Thank you for your prayers for these persecuted believers in Haiti. Please continue to lift them before God’s throne as they share a kingdom hope. Lesly is hopeful they will be able to host mission teams in the near future. Other information: they have 35 children at the orphanage and with help from our churches, are sponsoring 3 schools with a total of 490 children who receive free education.
GIVING OPPORTUNITY FOR HAITI - Pastor Lesly also recently let me know that they are short of beds for the orphanage children. They need to purchase 15 additional beds at a cost of $100 per bed. If anyone would like to contribute toward this expense, money can either be earmarked for Haiti beds and given through the church or sent to LHI, PO Box 100,000, Morrow, GA 30260-7000.

Do You Remember Tamara (Tammy) Speer Vinson?
Train a child in the way he should go, and when
he is old he will not turn from it
Pastor Rex, I am the oldest daughter of Edith Speer. I was baptized at the age of fifteen by Arlen Marsh at Golden Rule Church of God, and Pat Beam and Frank Roper were two of my youth Sunday School teachers. My years at Golden Rule mean everything to me. Golden Rule gave me my Christian foundation. It broke my heart when I heard they closed the doors. I will never feel the same about any church as I do about Golden Rule Church of God. I can't express enough how much it means to me to get your newsletter. I enjoy seeing the old familiar names and it's such a blessing to be able to know what's going on in your lives.
My husband Joe and I are happily married for 23 years and attend Christ United Methodist Church in Sugar Land, Texas. We are blessed with a wonderful, supportive church family that has accepted us with open arms. I attend an ongoing ladies Bible study on Tuesday evenings while Joe attends his men's group. We both have done our "Walk to Emmaus" and are very active in the Emmaus community. I’m a certified shorthand reporter and registered professional reporter. My husband is a legal videographer.”

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.”
“FRANCIS BURNETT (89) died yesterday evening. Some of you never knew him, but many of us did. The memories are golden as we remember those things that made him who he was.
He served churches in Missouri, Ohio, Michigan and Iowa, plus worked at both the Bible College and the General Conference. Many have wonderful memories of when he was the Leader of “National Youth Camp.”
The four Burnett girls – Martha, Mary, Mimi and Michael – were a great joy to him and his wife, Iris. They were all actively involved with their parents in the ministry.
Francis had a wonderful bass voice and many had the opportunity to sing with him. He mentored many as they entered ministry, and he remembered them after their ministries had begun. Young people who now have many years on them remember his influence at Camp Mack.
Down through the years he was a staunch man of God. He had his faults, but curiously I can’t call any to mind right now. I know I loved the man, and I appreciated the man as we worked together down through the years.
Now his service is ended. He will be laid to rest to await the call of Christ when the Lord returns, a truth that Francis loved and preached all his life. He sleeps now awaiting the trumpet call of the Lord when the dead in Christ rise to meet Him in the air and thus shall they ever be with the Lord!”

440 My Hope Is Built
(Living God’s Call to Justice)
By Mark Labberton
Recently in my devotional reading, I came across a quote with two edges – one as piercing as a laser beam and the other humorous. It’s a rare combination which provides a great lead into the subject of this month’s review book on the danger of serving a living, righteous, and all-powerful God. Norman Shawchuck says, "Wherever Paul and the others went, people were divided – some accepted, some opposed Paul’s preaching. Is this not better than what we see today? Virtually no preacher or teacher can cause a riot by reason of his or her preaching or teaching today; our words are too banal and too bland. When I consider my own teaching, I know I am safe. No one comes into my classroom without already being convinced. My only problem is to keep them awake and motivated to learn. There are no stonings or riots in my classroom. What a pity!"
The Dangerous Act of Worship (Living God’s Call to Justice) by Mark Labberton - What’s at risk in worship? Everything, says this author, for "Worship turns out to be the dangerous act of waking up to God and to God’s purposes in the world, and then living lives that actually show it." Worship is closely linked with justice in this book with the author saying the Bible teaches that the realities of oppression, poverty and injustice can be both a call to worship and an indictment of our failure to do so. Uh ... is he saying Christians are the ones responsible for dealing with – for solving the problems of oppression, poverty and injustice in the world? That’s one tall order! But this does seem to be pretty much exactly what he is saying. He says the church is not dead – but it is asleep – and this puts everything that matters at risk: God’s purposes in the church and in the world. Worship is meant to change us at the core. From selfishness, self-centeredness, self-preoccupation, self-involvement, self-idolatry to mercy, justice, love, peace – we are to be like Jesus and to have His heart for a lost and dying world. God seeks the fruit of justice and righteousness in His people.
