Sell Your Son For A Quarter?

Several years ago, a new preacher moved to Houston, Texas. Some weeks after he arrived, he had occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area.  When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change.  As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, "You'd better give the quarter back.  It would be wrong to keep it." Then he thought, "Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter.  Who would worry about this little amount.  Anyway, the bus company gets too much fare; they will never miss it.  Accept it as a 'gift from God' and keep quiet."

When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, "Here, you gave me too much change."  The driver with a smile replied, "Aren't you the new preacher in town? I have been thinking lately about going to worship somewhere I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change.  I'll see you at church on Sunday"

When the preacher stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, "Oh God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter."

Our lives are the only Bible some people will ever read. This is a really almost scary example of how much people watch us as Christians and will put us to the test!  Always be on guard and remember (as I try to remember) that you carry the name of Christ on your shoulders when you call yourself "Christian."

-- Pastor Larry Mayberry, cogpastors, Jan. 31, 2007.

OUR CONGREGATION OBSERVES COMMUNION each first Sunday of the month.  Jesus commanded us to partake of the cup (representing his blood) and the bread (representing his body) as a regular reminder to forgetful mankind that Christ gave Himself in humble obedience to His Father – the Almighty God of Israel.  God had planned Jesus’ vicarious death from the beginning of recorded history (Gen. 3:15, 21; Ps. 22). Jesus spilt his blood that our sins might be forgiven (Matt. 26:28) – that we could be justified (made righteous) before God.  Jesus said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” (I Cor. 11:23-26).  If you have been immersed in the waters of baptism and strive to follow the teachings of God’s Holy Word, you are welcome to partake of the emblems with us this morning.

THE THERMOMETER GRAPH has blown its top with a generous gift from our Golden Rule brethren.  We have received over $2000 of the $1500 toward the pastor’s laptop – a gift to him in lieu of a raise this coming year.

Rick Phillis wrote: “Peace, brothers and sisters in Christ.  Please accept this donation for Rex’s laptop.  Rex is very important to us also.”   - In the service of the King, Rick Phillis.

THANKS Golden Rule brethren for this generous donation – and thanks Bedford brethren for this thoughtful gift to help in my work.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Open Bible:  The flowers you sent are beautiful!  There are large orange Gerber daises, yellow carnations, light green mums, purple Delphiniums, and lavender Alstroemerie, etc.  I thank you so much.  Love to you all, Dorothy Robertson.”

DAN AND RACHEL CAIN’S address will be gladly provided if you contact me – we don’t put personal addresses on the Internet.

SHARON CAIN flew to GA on the 1st and is visiting Sarah & family in Atlanta until the 15th.

CORRECTION:  After printing last week’s bulletin I learned it was Andrew Weaver and not Steve who brought the message on the 22nd.   My thanks, Andrew!

TIM GUILES, Sharon Cain’s 38-year old nephew (her brother’s son) has been diagnosed with liver cancer.  He and his wife have two small children.  He’s very seriously ill and needs our ardent prayers.

EVANGELISTIC EFFORT:  Sean Finnegan (Church of God brethren) from New York plus 4 other men are arriving in Bedford Aug. 14th to witness on Bedford Square.  They will hand out literature and strike up conversations with people and, if interested, will direct them to our church.  They would be grateful for a light dinner Aug. 14th & overnight accommodations.  We’ll be working on that.

BRUCE REYE, last Sunday, was installed as pastor of our Chapel Hill Urbana Ohio Church.  The Reye name is familiar to our northern churches:  Bruce is the son of George Reye (deceased) and Russell Reye (deceased) was George’s brother.  Bruce is married with two children.

YOU CAN TAKE ON LINE BIBLE COURSES from both Atlanta Bible College and Rock River Christian College.  See bulletin board or Pastor Cain.

BUFFALO:  While on vacation I hoped to be up close and personal with a buffalo.  I got my wish!  We encountered them up close 3 different times, but once while enjoying a picnic in the woods at Yellowstone National Park, we looked up to see two of them coming straight toward us!  They were only 20 feet from us and we ran for the car!  Sharon was saying, “Roll up the windows” but in the confusion I couldn’t get to my keys in time to make the power windows work.  The two buffalo came right to the car and brushed down the side.  We could easily have reached out and scratched behind their ears!  They didn’t stick their big heads into the car (which we feared) but slowly walked on by.  That was as close and personal as I had ever anticipated!!

I VISITED JACK HEARP July 24th & he’s doing pretty well.  His home is up for sale and I was there to help load a truck with his books – some to the ABC library and some to RRCC library.

On The Lite Side:

I dialed a number and got the following recording:

"I am not available right now, but
thank you for caring enough to call.
I am making some changes in my life.
Please leave a message after the
beep. If I do not return your call,
you are one of the changes."
